Older than strip games, the practice of strip tease is as old as history itself. Many historians note the role of women dancing nude in front of an audience of men. Sometimes there were even religious undertones to the act, appeasing the gods so to speak. Some believe nude women could chase demons away, prevent pestilence in crop fields and turn the tides. Today, the strip-tease is all about the sex. Most of these 'shows' take place behind closed doors in darkened strip clubs or in a hotel room at a bachelor's party. The strip part of it is obvious, the woman removes an article of clothing at regular intervals throughout her dance. This is usually done to the rhythm of whatever song is playing, most times in costume. The tease part of it is in the slow removal, the erotic poses the stripper takes and in the interactions she has with her clientele.
In the early 1980’s, one pioneering strip club owner in San Francisco added lap dances to the mix. A lap dance is when the stripper disrobes and dances in the lap of the customer. Lap dances quickly spread throughout all strip clubs of the world. In the 1990’s, pole dancing became an art form. The stripper balances herself on the pole and uses it in her act, dancing in time to the music being played in the club. A good pole dancer makes the act look effortless, but it takes a concentrated effort and athletic ability to accomplish some of the moves that they do.
The characters they create in order to perform the act are typically over-exaggerated and over-the-top. A stripper portraying a Russian will complete the costume with the grim march onto the stage, short furry hat in place. If the character is a cop, a cowgirl, a Dominatrix, whatever, the appropriate props are used in conjunction with the act to ‘sell’ her role.
While the actual song used isn't all that important to the audience, it gives the strippers the sense of timing and flair. The typical songs used today for strippers include ‘Justify My Love’ by Madonna, ‘Luxurious’ by Gwen Stefani and other rather fast paced type songs.
